I tried it with a Seagate drive and it seems that even if I write the sectors and create the partitions, the XBOX still wouldn't recognize it.
Other ways of modifying the firmware aren't really known to us mortals, as it implies modifying data in "negative" logical sectors. I can download the update in just a few seconds but it will not complete the installation. Above cache clearing was completed4 times for good measure. After reboot the download still completes but does not fully install though it quickly shows it has almost a full green bar - over a direct network cable plugged into the XBOX console - with error code listed above in this thread.
I did not try the thumb drive download as that is not the issue - as stated above and other user here has the same issue - Please post an here answer soon. Seems to me that an Xbox live connection needs to be established before this will connect properly - but the update screen comes up before it connects to Xbox Live.
