Refresh Warning: The apps that came with your PC or you installed from Windows Store will be reinstalled, but any apps you installed from other websites and DVDs will be removed.

Windows puts a list of the removed apps on your desktop after refreshing your PC. I was using a vpn yesterday and was able to download the updates through that. Does that suggest a more specific type of problem? Ideally, I don't want to use a vpn all the time, but it is a work-around if nothing better comes along. Neil J. How satisfied are you with this reply? I replaced my GB with GB and couldn't get updates and searched for a week before finding your simple solution.

I had a similar problem after replacing a hard drive in a laptop Advent K Turned out to be nothing simpler than installing Vista Service Pack 1 to resolve issues with the new Advanced Format drive. I took a looooong route to get there though. I didn't realise the new Seagate drive was this new Advanced Format thing. I found this thread, tried drivers but nothing seemed to suit the laptop hardware. I initialliy restored Vista to a known working drive, let Windows Update do its thing then cloned the working drive to my new drive.

Booted into Vista but WU didn't work. I just assumed SP1 would've been installed as part of the WU procedure so hadn't thought to install it separately. I only stumbled upon it whilst searching Microsoft's support pages and read about a Hotfix to address a problem with Advanced Format drives.

I had bought a new bigger hard drive when my old one crashed, reinstalled windows and the drivers and was just tearing my hair out at why I couldn't update windows, much less install my virus protection program of choice Microsoft Security Essentials , etc.

I was also getting tons of errors in various places and was afraid to re-upload my files and do much online until I got this problem handled - took days of attempts and re-installs, etc. I have been wrecking my brain for weeks now, i tried the fix it now through Microsoft and nothing i modified my reg and nothing happen, tonight i was getting ready to do a clean install and wipe my hard drive but i decided to look some more for a possible answer and I'm glad i did cause i found this thread.

My Hero thanks so much this worked I been at this for days you would thought the people at Toshiba would have known this. I just wanted to sum up to legion of people thanking you. My problem was the same, Toshiba laptop for which I had changed the hard drive due to the old one breaking down. This was last year at around february-march I downloaded the driver you mentioned and my windows update is already up and running, installing like updates. Thank you so much!!!!!

I had not installed a new Hard drive but had to rebuild windows using the built in restore partition on a Toshiba laptop running Vista. Could not update. Still have issues with windows update crashing but I am ten steps forward instead of 20 back. Thank you very much David, You Rock!

I have had to replace my hard drive as well, and was getting the same A error when I tried using Windows update. After a lot of pain, your answer solved this obscure issue. I obtained the driver from the Intel site to get the latest. Thank you. By way of background, my machine was a Dell Studio laptop running a fresh install of windows 7 and a fresh upgrade to Pro.

I too have an obscure wifi problem at one particular location I go to and i'm guessing from one of the posts lower down here that this may well solve that intractable problem too. This is a bit nuts because upgrading a HDD is relatively common so i cant believe more people don't have this issue. Absolutely amazing I upgraded a gig drive to a gig drive and mine was a Toshiba not an HP Toshiba Satellite. After a few hours reading forums online I tried Davids solution. I've copied all partitions from old, small and almost crashed disk on Toshiba Satellite to new bigger one..

After some bigger and smaller problems and weeks spent on looking for solution we - I and my Client - decided to restore system to factory settings.

Hopefully I was able to do it from new - copied - disk. But, problems didn't finished! Now I wonder if it could be possible to repair this copied environment without the need for system recovery Best wishes to You, I have a pleasure to be in company of such happy people, but your pleasure is - I think - more than quadruple as mine :. Although when I try to download the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from the Intel website I get this error: "The computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software" What are the minimum requirements?

Is it for a laptop?? Also most of the responses seem to be from laptop users,. Everything I've experienced seems to point to the disc driver as the problem, but I am dead in the water unless I find the right one. Is it possible to get your assistance with this? It is driving me nuts.

It is running 64 bit Vista. I have received that A error for 2 days. I have tried to install the new driver as you suggested but I cant get it installed correctly I think. I can't use the link above, it won't load correctly on the machine. I can't install any updates at all in Windows, I just keep getting the same old error.

I tried to install the driver from the Intel site Version 8. According to the error code, this error shows up when Windows Update tries to prevent the update process from been interrupted while the system is performing a vital task.

Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

A lot of people come across code A in Windows 10, Windows 8.
